What kind of shape are your feet in? The average person takes about 10,000 steps per day, which add up to over 3 million steps per year. Often the most used and most neglected part of a person’s daily routine. The International Federation of Podiatrists has turned May into World Foot Health Awareness Month to inform the public on how to best take care of their primary means of transportation.
Good foot health is essential for an active life. We carry approximately four to six times our body weight across the ankle joint when climbing up stairs or walking steep inclines. With 26 bones and 33 joints, our feet are essentially the postural foundation for the rest of our skeletal structure. Foot pain and mechanical imbalance can affect other parts of our body, such as our knees, hips and even the lower back.
In celebration of Foot Health Awareness month in May, Vivir Healthcare recommends giving your feet a little extra attention. Below are some important foot health tips:
- Inspect your feet daily for any changes, discoloration of the skin or nails
- Trim toenails straight across, not down into the corners
- Pamper your feet. Always keep them warm, clean and dry
- Check your footwear. Shoes should be regularly examined for fit and signs of excess wear.
- Comfort is key. Avoid footwear that is constrictive and causes friction to skin or excessive calluses
- Keep moving! This encourages blood circulation to your feet
